Getting to Perhentian Island
Getting to Malaysia from Europe...
Perhentian Island lies in the warm waters of the South China sea off the North East coast of Malaysia.
Your journey to the Island starts by flying to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport – KLIA for short. This superb airport has won many awards and is a good example of the very modern side of Malaysia.
Most of the major airlines fly to KLIA. As an alternative you can fly to Singapore and then take a short flight to KLIA. Some of our favorites airlines are:
-for the budget conscious – Qatar Airways
-mid-range price and good service – Emirates fly via Dubai
We are happy to help you organise your travel to the island - just call us to discuss your requirements. While you're in Malaysia you'll probably also want to take advantage and see a little more of the country. Be it from visiting its thriving capital city, Kuala Lumpur, primary rain forests at Taman Negara or travelling on to Sabah or Sarawak, reportedly one of the most beautiful locations in the world, we have a wealth of knowledge and we are happy to share.
Our aim is to make your journey as stress free as possible.
Some people like to break their journey and visit Kuala Lumpur on the way and some like to go directly to the island and visit on the way back. The quickest way to Kuala Lumpur is to jump on the KLIA Express train which takes about 30 minutes.
While the more adventurous may want to use a train, car or bus to travel north (train informaition here), most will want to fly as this only takes 1 hour. Flights can be booked with either Malaysia airlines or Air Asia and you need to fly to Kota Bharu. It's worth noting that Air Asia fly from the "Low Cost Carrier Terminal" (LCCT) which is the other side of the runway so ensure you account for the ~20 minutes the shuttle bus takes to get there.
By land and sea...
Almost there - take a taxi from Kota Bharu to the jetty at Kuala Besut (around RM80). They can be booked in the bangage lounge on your arrival at the airport. It takes about 1 hour so sit back and enjoy the scenery as you pass through small villages, past tobacco plantations and rubber trees.
From Kuala Besut, take the water taxi to Perhentian Island. We are on the "Big Island" and if you ask for "Alu Alu" they will know where to take you.
The adventure starts here! The water taxi is a high powered speed boat that takes about 40 minutes to cover the 7km of sea across to the island. Be prepared for some splashing if it is windy and ensure your luggage is in a soft bag or rucksack. Suit cases are harder to manoeuvre on and off the boat. Remeber the last boats leave Kuala Besut as early as 4pm. So don't get there late.
The boat will normally drop you at a jetty attached to the Awana Hotel. Leave the jetty and walk left along the beach for about 100 metres to find our brightly coloured yellow building - you can't miss us! In fact you'll probably spot us and our bright yellow boats as the boat nears the beach.
Enjoy the warm sun, warm water and warm greeting when you arrive!
